Their desire was to find the earliest record of it. If the earliest record came well after Mr. Edison's lifetime, it would be questionable whether it could actually be attributed to him.
What they discovered were newspaper articles from 1902 and 1903 (well within Edison's lifetime since he died in 1931) that documented Edison's predictions for the year ahead.
